During this 15-day car tour you will visit the most beautiful cities whilst travelling quietly through the landscape of north-western and central Spain. Enjoy the culture and natural beauty of the country, and also have the option of a number of nights staying in the luxurious world of the Parador hotels.
Day 1 and 2: Madrid
You fly with the airline of your choice to Madrid and find your way to your hotel. From your hotel, the city fans out before you. Take the Metro to Gran Vía and perhaps visit Plaza de la Cibeles. You could do a “Paseo del Arte”, taking in sites such as the famous Museo del Prado, and later settle down in one of the many mesons on a terrace in the narrow streets for a tinto and tapas.
Day 3 and 4: Madrid – Salamanca (ca. 195 km)
On the way to Salamanca you will pass the imposing palace-monastery El Escorial and the walled city of Avila, before arriving at the old sand-coloured university city of Salamanca with the famous Plaza Mayor. The city offers such a large historical range that you are actually best to “get lost” and discover the attractions this city has to offer.
Day 5 and 6: Salamanca – Molinaseca / Ponferrada (ca. 325 km)
The journey today is on the program, first drive through the cities of Zamora and Astorga, both known for their cathedrals. From here follow the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago and the legendary Roman gold mines Las Médulas, before arriving in the lovely village of Molinaseca or Ponferrada.
Day 7 and 8: Villafranca del Bierzo – Santiago de Compostela (ca. 83 km)
Today you can drive to Santiago de Compostela, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and full of mysticism. In the Praza do Obradoiro is the impressive cathedral, which according to legend houses the mortal remains of Apostle James in the crypt.
Day 9 and 10: Santiago de Compostela – Oviedo (ca. 250 km)
After breakfast drive to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and cross the wide delta of the tidal river EO to enter the Principality of Asturias. The colourful old town of Oviedo is filled with squares and terraces, beautiful houses next to pre-Romanesque monuments, and many works of art.
Day 11 and 12: Oviedo – Leon (ca. 220 km)
Travel along the impressive mountains of the Picos de Europa National Park going through a narrow gorge, past picturesque mountain villages, then up to pass Puerto del Ponton and onto the road to León. Here you will see the impressive Gothic cathedral famous for the large number of art treasures and beautiful colourful stained glass windows.
Day 13 and 14: Leon – Segovia (ca. 280 km)
On the desolate Central Plateau you can drive to the hills surrounding the city of Segovia, from where you will see the whole city dominating the landscape. Pass by the monumental Roman aqueduct on arrival and you can indulge in the many cultural attractions Segovia has to offer, including the magnificent Alcázar.
Day 15: Segovia – Madrid (ca. 100 km)
The last day of the tour. Drive back to Barajas Madrid airport to return your rental car and then fly back. You can also lengthen your stay.
