During this car trip through northern Italy you will visit the highlights of history and culture. After your start at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, you will travel to Florence, Tuscany via Bologna, Venice, Verona and to the fashion city of Milan. You will stay in good 3 – and 4-star hotels in or near the city centre.
Day 1: Pisa
With your own car you drive to Pisa, where your journey through Northern Italy will start. You can also fly to Pisa or Milan, then hire a cheap rental car.
Day 2: Pisa
Perhaps there is no place in the world that has become such a familiar landmark as Pisa with its leaning tower, but Pisa has much more to offer. There are at least twenty other historic relics like palaces, churches, squares and lovely bridges to admire. The Piazza del Duomo with its medieval cathedral “Duomo” has a stunning appearance, as much by its size as its appearance. Visit the Piazza Dante where there are nice cafes and restaurants, or walk through the luxury shopping street of Borgo Stretto, Corso Italia and Via Santa Maria.
Day 3: Pisa – Lucca – Florence (approx. 90 km)
You should not miss nearby Lucca. Lucca is completely surrounded by a medieval city wall and has a fantastic beautiful square, which is smaller than that of Siena, but in beauty certainly not inferior. Then you can drive on to Florence for the next two nights.
Day 4: Florence
The ancient and historic city of Florence is at the top of the list of most visited cultural cities. This city is known for its history, architecture, art and culture, and is visited annually by millions of tourists. Monuments and buildings such as the Palazzo Pitti, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence Cathedral, Santa Croce, Michelangelo’s David, Santa Maria Novella, and do not forget the special museums and galleries, make Florence a top destination. One of the world’s most famous and important art galleries in the world of international and Florentine art is the Uffizi in Florence. Just about all the big names can be found in this beautifully designed particularly large museum which is already in itself worth a visit.
Day 5: Florence – Bologna – Venice (ca. 110 mi/ 240 km)
You will pass the city of Bologna on the way to Venice, a paradise for gourmets (tortellini and spaghetti Bolognese) and therefore almost an obligatory lunch stop. The centre is elegant with its many galleries and historic buildings. This afternoon, head towards the world famous city of water; Venice. The next two nights you will be staying in Mestre, about 2 km from Venice.
Day 6: Venice
The Italian city of Venice is unique in the world. Built largely on stilts, the city is known worldwide for its historic downtown with its many waterways. A cruise on a gondola through Venice is seen by many as one of the most romantic trips you can take. The gondola owners make clever use of this by charging very high rates. They know that you probably won’t refuse, because what is a vacation in Venice without a gondola ride? Besides the unique look of the city, Venice is also distinguished by the Carnival of Venice. This twelve-day festival dates back to the year 1268. Characteristic of the Venetian carnival are the masks, which became a popular souvenir from the city.
Day 7: Venice – Verona – Milan (ca. 115 mi/ 250 km)
From Venice you drive today along the southern tip of the lake, which will bring you to Verona, famous for the impressive Arena and the famous balcony of Romeo and Juliet. Afterwards drive to beautiful and historic Bergamo or Milan, where we have reserved. 2 nights for you.
Day 8: Milan
Milan is the fashion capital of Italy and an important business city in the country. Large companies arelocated in and around Milan and the Italian market is in Milan. As aromantic or cultural destination, the capital of Lombardy is overshadowed by Rome, Venice and Verona. In recent years, many city enthusiasts exploring the city appreciate that Milan is a city that is worth a visit in any season. The best way to travel in Milan quickly and cheaply is on the underground metro. The system is very well organized and the costs are low. On almost every street corner you’ll find metro stops.
