From the water to the sky! The most romantic city on earth we travel to the culinary highlight of South Tyrol. This wonderful journey takes you to the splendor of water – literally – highlighting in the area of food and drink. In 10 days you will see the best of Italy and have the chance to taste all the culinary sensations
Pristine forests, rugged mountain landscapes, hundreds of islands, thousands of bridges and beautiful buildings are interspersed with culinary and cultural riches. Italy’s art is not only reflected in the buildings, but also in food and drink and flamboyant lifestyle. The versatile cities and beautiful landscapes make an overwhelming impression that you will never forget.
Day 1: Venice
Arrival at Venice and collect your hire car. Drive to your overnight hotel in Treviso (30 km), or if you are in a hotel Venice, we recommend you get your car on the 4th day
Day 2-4: Venice
Suffice to say that you have arrived in the most romantic city in the world, Venice. You can simply stroll through the city, but it’s better to plan sightseeing in every time and hold on to each other as you run the risk of losing each other and getting lost in the narrow streets that are so small that they would not fit on a postage stamp.
The roads through the town are the channels that connect the more than 100 islands with each other. The islands are really crammed with beautiful buildings, churches and squares – which are called campo in Venice – museums, bridges and palaces. Gardens can be found next to nothing. There are terraces there, but they only usually have a few tables. The city, which consists of six parts, breathes culture and is absolutely breath-taking. Use the many boat buses and step from one wonder to another. Gondolas are also possible, although prices are high and € 80 for 30 minutes is normal. The gondola men are the only ones who know the byways of the Grand Canal to fathom. The water rises and falls with the tides almost a meter, this is clearly seen on the walls of the buildings.
You can take a boat to the Jewish quarter of Cannaregio, colourful Burano, Lidomundane, or the glass-blowing island of’Murano. On the water and in the campo, you can cool down and stop for a glass of wine. Some squares are overrun with tourists and some squares are empty, where you have the feeling that you are the first explorer. Because of the closed nature and the difficult water, many original residents have already moved away, but tourists and cultural festivals are plentiful. How could it be otherwise … especially when the sun shines and sets the azure water beautifully against the golden buildings and special Venetian styles.
Your car can be parked outside the city. Don’t forget to wear good walking shoes. The Italians manage to walk on stilettos over the worn cobble, but that’s not for everyone. Additionally, we recommend booking a terrace for dinner. These places are scarce and fill up quickly. So, if you see a nice restaurant on your tour around, write down the phone number and make a reservation in time. Terrazza Danieli has a great view, which, like the food, is priceless, but for a special occasion it’s a nice restaurant. Also Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor celebrated their parties here, around the corner from Saint Mark’s Square. You stay three nights in Venice or Treviso.
Day 5: Venice – Verona (ca. 120 km)
Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. To take a photo on the balcony at Casa di Giulietta is an important goal. Stood here, at least according to Shakespeare, Romeo sang under the balcony to Juliet. The city breathes Roman atmosphere as previously all the campaigns of the Romans to the Alps were planned from this city. The city is on the UNESCO heritage list and is therefore well conserved. A visit to one of the largest and best preserved amphitheatres in the world is a must.
The Adige River, which flows through the city forms a unity with the beautiful bridges. The Basilica of San Zero is famous for its exceptional frescoes. Piazza dei Signori is surrounded by historical buildings and churches. In the city you can find stylish shops and lots of terraces. The famous football clubs ensure now that the city is regularly in the news, but this gem is so much more. In terms of dining, the Ristorante La Fontanina is a topper. You will stay in Verona.
Day 6-7: Verona – Trento / Garda (ca.. 100 km)
Drive through the massifs of the Dolomites to the northern tip of Lake Garda Riva del Garda and the city of Trento, where the sun shines 300 days a year. The style of the city is of Celtic origin, also features Renaissance influences and accents from Central Europe. It’s like walking through a work of art, more austere than in the cities of Venice and Verona but surrounded by fresh air, and green space. The combination of sightseeing in the city with a day sunbathing along the deep blue Lake Garda is one in which you can completely relax. Here you can also encounter unparalleled culinary highlights. You will stay 2 nights in Trento.
Day 8-9: Trento – Merano (ca. 85 km)
There is a culinary event in Europe five times a year held in several castles in Merano and surroundings. “Stelle, Malghe e castelli “, or “Star, pastures and castles”, where haute cuisine, historic sites and pristine mountain meadows are the main ingredients. Merano is clearly the bustling culinary center of South Tyrol. Here you can dine 365 days a year at star level. Led by top chefs, you can walk through the Alpine meadows, cycle along wineries or just create your own picnic basket.
Our tip: load your car full of wine – Lagrein and Santa Maddalena are recommended – and other delicious specialties such as cheeses, sausages and balsamic vinegar truffles. This is the last stop on your journey and your own kitchen the best. We say: just get as much inspiration as possible in restaurants, caterers and specialty stores in and use the walks as an aperitif. Stay 2 nights in Merano.
Day 10: Merano – Venice (ca. 290 km)
If you arrived in Venice by plane, then you drive 3 hours back to the airport.
